◼︎ Our priorities
Put the humanity back in healthcare.
Our goal is to put the humanity back in healthcare by having more time with our patients and making our profession sustainable.
◼︎ We’re advocating for
Three things that will change everything.
-

Paid Parental Leave for All
We’re leading the call for 18 weeks’ paid leave for all parents in Allegheny County.
-

Safe Staffing
National, evidence-based staffing ratios will give us more time with every patient.
-

Nurse Retention
Our compensation and benefits should be transparent, equitable, reward experience, and lead the market.
◼︎ The Problems
A system that puts profits over patients.
Across the U.S., people are getting sicker and poorer under a healthcare system that puts profits over patient care. Despite spending more on healthcare than any other nation, we have some of the poorest health outcomes on earth. (Source: Commonwealth Fund)
Here at Magee, too often nurses are rushed through care, unable to give patients the time they deserve because we’re juggling overwhelming assignments — while still lacking professional benefits like paid parental leave and affordable health insurance.
Pennsylvania has the worst nursing shortage crisis in the entire nation — 20,000 unfilled positions.
Our work gets harder every year as patients’ needs grow more complex and the profession struggles through a crisis accelerated by COVID. A lack of benefits and compensation drives experienced nurses from the field and creates a constant churn of new nurses.
What we learned from our 2025 survey of Magee nurses
most important to us
Pay and compensation

◼︎ The Solutions
What we’re fighting for.
Paid Parental Leave for All
Leading a coalition for a policy giving every parent working in Allegheny County paid parental leave — one of the best ways to improve outcomes for mothers and babies, and a direct response to community feedback on postpartum support.
In May, the County Board of Health introduced the proposal for 18 weeks’ paid parental leave.

Protections for Nurses and Patients
We are united for a contract that includes:
Minimum, acuity-based staffing levels per department, proven necessary to protect patient safety and quality of care.
Scheduling that drives sustainability, letting nurses stay at the bedside as life circumstances evolve.
Significant pay investment for all RNs, NPs, midwives, and lactation consultants reflecting our role in UPMC’s success.
Professional benefits: affordable health insurance, adequate time off, and training that preserves Magee’s leadership in women’s health.
◼︎ We’re advocating for
The resources to do it right.
While these challenges aren’t unique to UPMC, we believe UPMC and Magee are uniquely positioned — with the resources and expertise — to chart a new path forward for our healthcare system.
